There is no better system than democracy right? The will of the people leads the way and the majority is almost always right even with difficult decisions…
Fast forward to 2024 – a third of young americans are not certain the earth is round: We realize that the majority of people have no notion how to act on even simple decisions….
Every day, I see posts and comments online that seem suspiciously coordinated. You know the type – hundreds of accounts spouting the same anti-climate change rhetoric or aggressively pushing fringe conspiracy theories. It turns out, many of these accounts aren’t real people but bots – automated programs designed to mimic human behavior and manipulate public opinion.
These bot nets are used to create the illusion that a significant portion of the population holds certain views, often extreme or misinformed ones. They flood comment sections, upvote misleading articles, and spread disinformation at an alarming rate. This manipulation is incredibly harmful, especially for movements like ours that rely on genuine grassroots support and honest dialogue.
The problem with bot nets isn’t just their presence but their impact. When fake accounts dominate discussions, they drown out real voices. They can make it seem like there’s widespread opposition to climate action, discouraging people from joining the cause or speaking out. They skew public perception, making it harder for the truth to be heard amid the noise.
Many bot nets have been traced back to russian origins – to spread doubts about topics like the war in ukraine and boost harmful ideas like fascism and extremism – ultimately seeking to destabilize western societies- and guess what: it’s well on track to succeed!

As a young climate activist, I find it distressing to see these phony voices polluting our digital spaces. We are striving for genuine change in the real world, and our online interactions should reflect this. It is critical that social media platforms and news sites crack down on these botnets. In reality they don’t seem to really be able to or want to solve this issue, skewed opinions actually increase interactions, and thats exactly what news websites and social media platforms thrive on…
Remember that our strength rests in our genuineness. We need promote authentic perspectives, offer accurate information, and foster a genuine community dedicated to sustainable change. Our struggle for the Earth is based on facts and reality.
Or do we need botnets of our own that oppose the existing ones spreading lies with replies that provide factchecks and links to verified information sources to invalidate the missinformation?
